Apple is looking into a new type of technology aimed at prolonging the battery life of your iPhone or iPad device. Read on to find out more.
The need for better battery life in mobile devices is evident. While processor speeds continue to increase at an exponential rate (1GHz! Dual-core! Quad-core!) and touchscreens get ever bigger, brighter and sharper, not much attention has been paid to the thing powering your multitasking wonderphone.
Which is why you have to charge your phone every blinking night. Younger readers might not realise, but you used to be able to go days in between mobile phone charges.
Enough reminiscing – Apple’s looking to address the situation. The company has filed a patent application for a technology that would increase battery capacity without increasing its size. Using a “multi-step constant-current constant-voltage” technique – or CC-CV for short – would allow Apple to increase the density of the active material within each battery.
There appear to be a few technical hitches at present, particularly the method’s tendency to lower battery life when at low temperatures or in a higher states of charge (between 70 and 100 per cent). Apple’s solution is to dynamically alter the charge current accordingly.

Anyway, enough technical talk. The end result would be a win-win for you, the end user. It would mean either smaller batteries (leading to more feature-packed phones) or longer-lasting charges. Who knows? You might be able to take your iPhone 6 with you on a weekend trip without having to take a charger. We can dream.
