Laptop Battery life could get much better in 2011

PC laptop manufacturers have wrestled with the issue surrounding battery life for years, not least of which because business users keep talking about how productivity can be hampered when the juice runs out. But some new models coming out this year may finally make “all-day” Dell d630 battery Dell inspiron 1520 Batteries life a reality.

Lenovo was the first to unveil one of these with the ThinkPad T420, an ultra-thin notebook weighing under four pounds. The company announced that it could stay on for up to 30 hours on one charge, provided the user had the extended battery, which is larger than the standard one. The standard one is a 9-cell battery that can go for up to 15 hours, while the extended one adds another nine cells to double the power.
Meanwhile, HP unveiled its EliteBook 8460p, which can go as high as 32 hours when you get the optional high-capacity apple a1175 battery acer aspire 5920 batteries. And it can stay on that long, despite a next-generation Intel Core processor and 14-inch HD display.
All that said, battery life numbers have always been inflated because they aren’t based on real usability tests, other than just turning the machine on and letting it function without so much as an app open. Hence, why it’s a bit more believable that Apple’s new MacBook Pro lineup announced last week won’t top seven hours of battery life, even at the best of times.
Still, Lenovo and HP have created business notebooks that should easily survive a full work day, and then some. Assuming the EliteBook goes a full 32 hours, that’s like flying to China and back with a little time to spare to check email.
At this point, neither manufacturer has said much of anything about when these battery life levels will be seen with consumer notebooks, but a 15-hour charge should be coming, if not this year, then almost certainly by sometime in 2012. Sub-$1,000 notebooks are already in the five-to-seven hour range, depending on the model, of course, so it’s only a matter of time.

iPhone 5 specs outshine iPad 2 for fence sitters

The iPhone 5 is set to bring imbalance to the force as its hardware specs appear set to outshine those of the iPad 2, as Apple’s two new high profile releases of 2011 gear up for an in-house spitting match as far as which one scores the highest in the upgrade department. At present, the existing iPhone 4 and first gen iPad find themselves fairly well matched. They both sport an A4 processor, and while the current iPhone has the superior screen quality, the current iPad offers a larger high-end storage capacity. But various bits of quasi-inside information are now floating around which peg the iPhone 5 as having a next-gen A5 processor even as the iPad 2 remains on the slower A4 platform. This is on top of the fact that while the iPhone 5 screen will remain at least as high quality as that of the current iPhone, there are repeated claims that the iPad 2 screen won’t even reach the quality of the one already found in the iPhone 4, as well as the assertion that the iPad 2 camera will only have a fraction of the megapixels of its iPhone counterpart. Bummer for those who are looking to buy both, but perhaps an easier decision now for those sitting on the fence as to which of these two new products they plan to pick up.
So does this mean the iPhone 5 will succeed with flying colors and the iPad 2 will lay an egg? Hardly. Predicting a device’s success based on specs alone rarely goes anywhere. For instance the iPod touch 4 offers a 64 GB storage option while the iPhone 4 tops out at 32 GB, and yet the iPhone still vastly outsells the iPod touch. In fact in the early days of the iPod, competitors routinely attempted to compete by packing heavier specs into their devices, which never did get them anywhere.
And with the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 coming from different product categories, they’re not competing directly with each other anyway. But there will undoubtedly be some users who already have an iPhone and an iPad, and know they only have the budget to upgrade to the new generation on one of those fronts in 2011, and will be looking for signs as to which new Apple product they should exchange their dollars for. For many consumers in such a position, it’ll come down to whether they happen to have more use for a newer better phone or a newer better tablet. For for others on the fence, the apparent lack of gee-whiz hardware specs in the iPad 2 may open the door for the iPhone 5 to claim many of the fence sitters – assuming the iPhone 5 ends up offering major spec upgrades in its own right.

Tech Notebook - Even with a Verizon iPhone and momentum for Android

We've been writing a lot this week about Apple's iPhone -- and its availability next month through Verizon Wireless.

Without the iPhone, Verizon's lineup has been dominated by smart new phones -- such as Motorola Mobility's Droid X and Droid 2 -- that run Mountain View Internet juggernaut Google's Android operating system.
Even with a Verizon iPhone, Palo Alto industry analyst Canalys predicted this week, Google's Android army will grow more than twice as quickly as its major smartphone rivals. "With Android's momentum expected to stay strong, the installed base of Android-based smartphones and pads will rapidly increase," Canalys senior analyst Daryl Chiam said in an e-mail.
As of the third quarter of 2010, Android had an estimated 25.1  percent share of the global smartphone market, according to  Canalys, compared with 17.4 percent for Apple's iPhone.
Smartphone and computer makers including Motorola, HTC,  Samsung and Acer are planning numerous Android devices in  2011, Canalys noted.
"Vendors are trying to differentiate further on the hardware  front, with faster and more powerful processors, as well as larger screen sizes," Chiam wrote. "Last week, LG announced the first smartphone to support a dual-core processor, while Acer and Samsung showcased smartphones with screen sizes of 4.8 inches and 4.5 inches, respectively."
Other analysts expect Verizon will sell millions of iPhones this year, with many of those
buyers choosing the Apple device instead of Android phones or Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices.
Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall expects Verizon will sell 12 million iPhones this year, according to an e-mail this week. That's in line with estimates from other analysts. Ticonderoga Securities' Brian White, for example, forecast that Verizon could sell 11.7 million iPhones in 2011.
Is the West Coast the best coast? This week, our friends at Bloomberg News profiled venture capital firm Greylock Partners, increasingly a Silicon Valley powerhouse since it moved its headquarters to Menlo Park from Boston in 2009.
Greylock, the Bloomberg story noted, has invested in four big Internet upstarts: Palo Alto social networking powerhouse Facebook, Mountain View professional networking site LinkedIn, San Francisco social games developer Zynga and Chicago online daily deals site Groupon. Jeff Clavier, founder of Palo Alto-based SoftTech VC, even described Greylock as "the cool, new kid on the West Coast."

Oddly enough, though, Palo Alto venture capital firm Accel Partners (also a Facebook investor) revealed on the same day that it's opening a New York office. "We are seeing a rise of opportunities and increasing momentum, thanks to the convergence of retail, media, fashion and technology talent in the New York area," Accel partner Theresia Gouw Ranzetta explained in a news release.
Accel has already invested in 15 Big Apple-based companies, including such fashionable names as Etsy, Squarespace and Glam Media.
Real estate reviews: The Seattle real estate website is known best for its home value "Zestimates." (As for this writer, given how much his mortgage is underwater, he tries not to look.) This week, Zillow added a new feature: reviews and ratings of real estate agents.
