Microsoft reports of a zero-day vulnerability impacting Internet Explorer based on how it handles CSS

Microsoft is investigating reports of a zero-day vulnerability impacting Internet Explorer based on how it handles CSS. The issue was discovered using cross_fuzz, a browser fuzzing tool created by a Google researcher who went public with the IE flaw because he believes Chinese researchers also recently discovered the same vulnerability.

Jerry Bryant, manager of response communications for Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing group, confirmed that Google provided Redmond with a copy of the fuzzing tool back in July 2010. Neither company found any issues in IE using the initial version of cross_fuzz, but this changed recently when cross_fuzz was updated.

"On December 21, a new version of the tool was reported to us along with information about a potentially exploitable crash found by the new version," Bryant said in a statement. "We immediately worked to reproduce the issue with the updated and original tool and are currently investigating it further to determine if it is actually exploitable."

In a timeline of the events, Zalewski writes that this is incorrect: "the current PR messaging from Microsoft implies that substantial differences existed between July and December fuzzer variants, and that the July 29 could not reproduce the vulnerability outlined in msie_crash.txt. This is inconsistent with my record."

The next day, Microsoft issued Security Advisory (2488013) confirming that the vulnerability impacted all supported versions of IE. Microsoft explained that the vulnerability exists due to the creation of uninitialized memory during a CSS function within the browser, making it possible for the memory to be leveraged by an attacker with a specially crafted webpage.

Details on the IE vulnerability are probably more widely known than Microsoft would like, especially given that the researcher in question, Michal Zalewski released the fuzzing tool to the public on New Years Day. It's worth noting that a Google employee has done this before, disclosing an IE flaw that could allow attackers to steal private information from online services. Then and now, Microsoft argued that details should not be disclosed publicly until a patch is available.

Microsoft argues that Zalewski has increased the risk to IE users since cyber criminals will find a way to exploit the flaw before a patch can be thoroughly tested and widely distributed. At the same time, Microsoft says it is currently unaware of any attacks trying to use the vulnerability. The company is actively monitoring the situation and may provide a security update on an upcoming Patch Tuesday (the next is January 11) or an out-of-cycle patch. Next week is a bit soon for a patch, and the company usually doesn't get fixes out on the next patch cycle. That being said, this time the company can't simply tell users to upgrade to the latest and greatest, since all versions are affected.

Look for the Consumer Electronics Show opening later this week to be all about 4G devices and tabs, but not the much-anticipated iPhone for Verizon.

Sascha Segan reports in bestlaptopbattery.co.uk: “This is going to be a huge show for 4G.” He said Verizon Wireless (VZ) may introduce a half-dozen LTE phones and tablets. There also is chatter about 4G devices from Samsung, LG and HTC. T-Mobile likely will show off its HSPA+ phones and tablets.

"Certainly the Number One trend [at CES] will be tablets," said NPD Group analyst Stephen Baker in article by Glen Chapman at AFP. "I think every smartphone and PC (personal computer) company will either have one on their show floor; be showing them behind closed doors, or announcing things."

Anywhere from 40 to 80 tabs are expected to debut at CES, which starts on Thursday with over 2,000 exhibitors at the event in Las Vegas.

Expect a CES demo of Motorola’s (MOT) 10-inch tablet using Android Honeycomb from Google (GOOG). “We're going to see a lot more of the Island of Misfit Tablets—low-cost tablets of questionable quality based on Android Froyo software, which may end up on convenience store shelves or sold at a discount through computer retailers,” according to Segan.

Analyst Rob Enderle said: “We are going to be up to our armpits in crappy tablets, and I do mean crappy.”

Buzz has been building about the iPhone 4 coming to Verizon, ending the AT&T (T) monopoly. But don’t look for the announcement at CES, which is not a favored Apple (AAPL) venue.

Segan said, “Verizon is sinking a lot of time and effort into promoting LTE devices at CES. ForApple to step in and steal the stage would be getting that relationship off to a really bad start.”

Microsoft first introduced tablet PCs about a decade ago

Microsoft is expanding its business based product lines by tabbing the tablet computer segment.

The company announced it would release a touchscreen device next month and offer an alternative to the popular Apple iPad.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said he plans to introduce the device during the show as well as give consumers a preview of features in the upcoming Windows 8 operating system.

The iPad is the clear frontrunner in the tablet computer market, so it is expected that Microsoft will struggle to gain ground even with a functionally competitive product.

Instead of planning the product for casual use, Microsoft has said it plans to make a tablet suited for business users who want to work with Microsoft’s lineup of Office programs like Windows, PowerPoint and Excel.

Some tech experts believe that the Windows operating system may be the best match for tablet computing, even more user friendly than Apple’s iOS, Android or PlayBook from RIM. A tablet running on Windows would simply be a streamlined version of a regular PC with the capability to handle all the standard Windows software.

A second school of thought contends that Windows and its robust software offerings could be the downfall of Microsoft’s tablet. There could be an inclination to cram too many features and programs into the device, running up costs and possibly hurting mobile functionality.

When Microsoft first introduced tablet PCs about a decade ago, they never really caught on. Now that consumers have changed their minds of the usefulness of a tablet, maybe the company will be able to make a dent in the market. Even in today’s current market a majority of netbooks run a streamlined version of the Windows OS.
