How many of you out there know about proper laptop battery care? There are so many urban legends and myths regarding batteries that it is hard to know what is real and what is not.

Laptops original batteries are really expensive to buy a new one. If you don't take care of your laptop batteries after just finishing the warranty date they are going to be useless.
Laptops are getting better, faster, lighter day by day. Only one thing still remains "frozen": the battery. Progress in developing a revolutionary battery, lighter, with increased capacity, low cost, RoHS compliant and compatible with most laptops around the world is painstakingly slow. Other features found in laptops and notebooks can help users increase their battery's life, but sooner or later, the battery is going to run dry.
  • One of the tricks is to use the energy saving mode.
  • Decrease the resolution of the notebook to the limit, that it is comfotable to read text from it.
  • When the notebook is not in use, let the notebook be on stand-by mode.
  • Turn off the peripherals, which you are currently not using like the digital camera, etc. These peripherals, although not in use, pull energy from the notebook battery.
  • Try to use the notebook in cool temperature. When the temperature is hot, the battery loses its charge early.
  • When the notebook is not in use, remove the battery from the notebook. This increases the life of the batteries.
If possible, use virtual drives instead of real ones as the optical drives are bigger power consumers than the hard drives.
Do not leave a charged battery unused for a very long time. Once charged, a battery should slowly be used but not completely dried up as that would deteriorate it. Use the hibernate function as that would save the state of your system and then shut down the entire laptop, instead of stand-by which only lowers power consumption. Because laptops are more efficient when they are cooler try and keep the temperature down by cleaning air venting holes and coolers.
If your operating system supports it (and most do), optimize the power usage through a control panel like "Power Options" in Windows. Multitasking capabilities are nice but they are draining the battery quickly, so set your mind on the most important task and postpone everything else.

The Secret of New PC designs for Small Business

You might know the old joke about Henry Ford's first car -- it was available in either black or black. With laptops and other computer form factors, there are only a few design options. Now, some PC makers are challenging that notion.
Much of the media attention at the recent Consumer Electronics Show(CES) surrounded new computer styles, shapes and sizes -- perhaps signaling a change from the tried-and-true laptop form factor popularized over the past two decades.
One attention-getting device is the Dell Inspiron Duo, which looks like a typical netbook at first glance but actually transforms into a tablet when you remove the LCD touch display. Lenovo offers a similar model called the LePad U1, but that hybrid was first announced over a year ago.
Another laptop, which uses dual touchscreens instead of a physical keyboard, is the Acer Iconia. The main advantage of this new form factor is that the keyboard can be customized or changed altogether depending on what you need the laptop to do.
Another model, the Razer Switchblade, has keys that display different words or icons depending on the application -- say, for gaming or for getting real work done.
So, are these new form factors innovative? Sure. Practical? That's another -- and perhaps more important -- consideration altogether.blok, a kindergarten classroom PC, designed by Christianne LeBlanc, Jessica Livingston and Maarianne Goldberg.
As usual, the hardest part about deciding whether these new form factors make sense is just being careful to avoid the lure of something being new and interesting, and then determining whether they will actually make sense for real work. To find out, we caught up with industry experts to weigh in on the pros and cons of alternative computer styles.
Does 'one size fits all' work?
"We've all been conditioned into believing that something that's remained fundamentally unchanged for decades is a classic, successful, perfect design that needs no additional modification," begins Carmi Levy, an independent technology analyst based in London, Ontario. "In the case of the basic laptop, however, classic doesn't mean ideal -- despite the fact that the basic laptop has become an icon of business and consumer computing, it's been apparent for years that its one-shape-fits-all form factor falls short."
Levy says enterprise and consumer buyers are often "complacent," and in turn stick with a familiar design. "Because of this, hardware vendors, afraid of introducing the PC world's equivalent of the Edsel, have shied away from stretching the form factor envelope."
Times might be changing, however.
"The tablet is the first truly successful post-laptop design for a mobile productivity device in a generation -- it has opened the door to other hybrid hardware designs by softening buyer resistance anything that strays too far from the trusty old laptop design."
The new laptop-tablet hybrids may just be a smart new form factor, he says.
"The Dell Inspiron Duo (aka Sparta) is just close enough to existing form factors that buyers might be willing to give it a shot. It's evolutionary, not revolutionary, and that could be more than enough to begin to give Dell some sales momentum in this emerging market slice."

Faux Laptop With a Phone For Brains by www.bestlaptopbattery.co.uk

Today's best smartphones are really hand-held computers. They run a vast variety of applications, from productivity programs to games, that mimic what laptops do. Their biggest limitations for serious work, gaming, Web surfing and multimedia are their small screens, cramped keyboards and tinny speakers.

So, what if you could use the brains and connectivity of such a hand-held computer to drive a laptop-size screen, keyboard and speakers, thus overcoming these limitations? Well, Motorola Mobility has devised a new phone and accessory that aim to do just that: to make the phone the only computer you need.
I've been testing this new phone, the Atrix 4G, an Android device that will cost $200 with a two-year contract and will run on AT&T's network. It's slated to be available by March 6. I've also been testing its unusual and clever accessory called the laptop dock, which looks like a large netbook, with an 11.6-inch screen, full keyboard, touch pad, and stereo speakers. This dock, the price of which depends on when you buy it, has no processor, no file storage and no connectivity of its own. It's dormant until you plug the Atrix into a slot behind the screen.

When you dock the phone, the faux laptop comes alive. It duplicates the phone's screen on its larger display and lets you use its connectivity and apps. It also contains a battery that charges the phone. The image of the phone's screen, and any of its apps you run, can be actual size or blown up to use the dock's larger screen.
Full-Screen Firefox
Even more interestingly, the dock gives you access to a full, and full-screen, PC version of the Firefox Web browser. Firefox is tucked away inside the Atrix but is available only when the phone is plugged into the laptop dock or a second, smaller dock that's meant to connect to a TV or desktop monitor. The smaller dock lacks a built-in keyboard, battery or screen.
The laptop dock costs $500, but AT&T will knock the price down to $300, after rebates, if you buy it at the same time you buy the phone. That brings the combined price of both devices to $500—the same as the separate price for the dock. The smaller dock, called the multimedia dock, costs $190.
In my tests, the Atrix and the laptop dock performed mostly as advertised. The phone had no trouble driving the larger screen or the full Firefox browser.
