Battery Debate- Good Enough or Breakthrough Needed?

We've had a running discussion this week about the importance of Acer aspire 5920 Batteriesbreakthroughs to the future of the electric car. We pulled in Shai Agassi, head of Better Place, Dave Vieau, CEO of battery makerA123 Systems, battery researchers Ilan Gur and Davidl Danielson at the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency, and David Kirsch, a leading historian of electric vehicles.
tomblois.jpg
Gur and Danielson's post provides some excellent context about the history of Acer as07b71 Batteries development. They note that battery innovation was an absolutely fundamental part of the rise of the gadgets we all know and love. Those sleek tablets depend on the constantly improving variations on the lithium-ion battery.
To get a sense for just how revolutionary lithium ion has been, consider that the nickel-cadmium ("NiCad") battery which powered [Nokia's early cellphone] the Cityman was barely half the size and weight of the first rechargeable battery technologies ever commercialized in the 1800's. In contrast, a mere 20 years of lithium ion development has driven nearly a 5-fold improvement, and at a significantly lower cost point.
The market demand for better and better batteries from the consumer electronics space pulled the technology far enough along that electric vehicles with over 100 miles of range. Unfortunately, that performance comes with a price, and it doesn't make the cars the equivalents of their gasoline-powered brethren.
"Even with the latest lithium ion batteries, equipping a vehicle with 100 miles of electric driving range requires a battery pack that costs upwards of $15,000, weighs about 500 pounds, and takes up a lot of precious space," Gur and Danielson wrote.
They think it's fairly clear that some kind of battery breakthrough is necessary -- and possible.
Hard to imagine a game-changer in EV batteries? Just keep in mind that after its release in 1991, Li-ion technology quickly took off to ultimately capture the entire market for portable electronics. And just a few years earlier, in the mid-1980s, nobody saw it coming.
Electric vehicle historian David Kirsch isn't quite so confident about the prospects of battery innovation. He notes that in the electric vehicle space, there's always been a "better battery bugaboo." There has been a widespread belief that better Dell 6400 Batteries were what would solve the EV problem.
According to [Department of Energy chief Steven] Chu, the super-battery -- one that could affordably and sustainably power say a Ford Fusion 450 miles on a single charge -- is almost here: "It's not like it's 10 years off in the future.... It might be five years off.... It's soon!" Sounds good, but the super-battery has been five years away for more than 100 years. Seriously.
It's not that Kirsch doesn't think that major changes can happen within the transportation system, but he doesn't think that getting the precise right set of performance characteristics for the electric vehicle battery is the most important factor in their success. He supports broader based reform to reduce our dependence on oil for transportation.
I'm most excited about new business models like Better Place's battery exchange system that eliminate "range anxiety." I'm excited about plug-in hybrids that use off-the-shelf battery technology to increase convenience and efficiency at marginal cost. And I'm excited about new mobility concepts like car- and ride-sharing that challenge long-standing behavioral assumptions and create value in new ways. What do all these new concepts share? They have nothing to do with the battery.
Shai Agassi, CEO of Kirsch-favorite, Better Place, made his case today for his company's business model. In a model that once worked for The Electric Vehicle Company, the first organized car concern in America, Better Place is setting up the infrastructure to hot-swap batteries out of cars. The way Agassi puts it, you buy the car but not the battery, which is actually how you buy your gasoline-powered car, too.
By separating the ownership of the car and the Acer as07b72 Batteries and providing consumers with the network and infrastructure to conveniently charge the battery when parked -- or switch the battery in less time than it takes to refuel on longer drives -convenience is attained. Price the car without the battery at purchase, and the rest as you drive and the electric car enjoys the same buying model as a gasoline car - and the electric car proves cheaper today and progressively cheaper to own and operate with time.
Better Place, then, is engineering around the limitations of today's batteries rather than trying to fix the batteries themselves. With his model, incremental improvements in battery performance would be just fine.
And that was the point made by Dave Vieau, CEO of batterymaker A123 Systems. Dell inspiron 1520 Batteries have gotten good enough to give electric cars a chance at widespread adoption. He noted the many problems associated with our dependence on foreign oil, and presumably if such costs were accurately accounted for, electric vehicles with today's batteries would look fantastic from a societal perspective.
Innovation in batteries is obviously a big topic, and I don't think we settled it this week. I hope we did give you a good perspective on the state of play and the positions of the various players.
One thing I'd add to the discussion, as I noted in a video I posted today, is that I'm very optimistic about materials science. While people used to do experiments on coming up with new battery materials in the physical world. More and more materials science work can be modeled on computers, greatly speeding up the discovery and characterization of new materials. In science and the consumer marketplace alike, any time you can hitch your wagon to Moore's Law, which describes the exponential cost declines and power increases of computing, it's a good thing.

Need to Know 8 Things That Suck About the iPad

A lot of people at Gizmodo are psyched about the iPad. Not me! My god, am I underwhelmed by it. It has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make buying one the last thing I would want to do.
Apple iPad Review
Big, Ugly Bezel
Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It'shuge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.
No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks Dell studio 1535 battery,Dell studio 1737 Laptop Battery, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.
No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?hp nc6400 battery
Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.
Apple iPad Review
No HDMI Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.
The Name iPad
Get ready for Maxi pad jokes, and lots of 'em!
No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.
Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.
Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.
It's Not Widescreen
Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!
Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G
Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

A Closed App Ecosystem
The iPad only runs apps from the App Store. The same App Store that is notorious for banning apps for no real reason, such as Google Voice. Sure, netbooks might not have touchscreens, but you can install whatever software you'd like on them. Want to run a different browser on your iPad? Too bad!

Archos Announces The Launch Of An All New High End Tablet

One of the foremost French consumer electronics company, Archos, at the CeBIT 2011 in Hanover, Germany, has now announced the introduction of an all new high end tablet device, that the company plans to launch the IFA 2011 in Berlin later this year. This new line of tablets Acer aspire 5920 Batteries,Dell d620 Battery are sure to be devised to provide some sort of competition to the incredibly famous Apple iPad (though I guess, iPad 2 might prove to be too much for Archos) and other tablets such as the likes of Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 etc.
archos arnova android tablets CeBIT 2011: Archos Announces The Launch Of An All New High End Tablet For IFA 2011
However, the most striking fact about the announcement of the new high end tablet Dell inspiron 1525 Battery,Hp pavilion dv6 battery is that, Archos in its statement has revealed that the company itself is in dark as to the hardware it would be incorporating in the new tablet (strange right? It might be a surprise for Archos too!). Though it would make no sense whatsoever as to why a company would announced a product, without having the slightest idea to the components that are to be placed in to the product, yet the tablet market is so fierce, that such tactics aren’t surprising. However, some believe that the hardware of the new high end tablet from Archos will be quite similar to the tablets of the current generation, as the Archos tablet could very well be powered by Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor and running tablet specific OS in the form Google Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’.

3D Laptop – Dell Infuses XPS 17-inch Laptop With 3D Screen

Release dates for Dell's refreshed XPS laptops have turned into a moving target, and all the specs haven't been quite clear. Yet Dell on Tuesday suddenly announced immediate US availability for both the 15- and 17-inch models, along with a finalized feature set that now officially includes 3D video.

Dell XPS 17 3D 17-inch 3D Gaming Laptop PC

In a Dell press briefing session I attended during CES in January, Alison Gardner, a Dell product manager, sketched out new features for "AV enthusiasts"-such as JBL speakers and MAXXAudio 3-and for "immersive multimedia."

Dell asked reporters to hold off on publishing stories about the new notebooks pending a formal announcement then slated for February 20. Yet Dell's Lionel Menchaca detailed some preliminary specs-for the XPS 17 only-in a blog posted on Dell's Web site, also during the week of CES.

Sure enough, while Dell's formal announcement on February 20 didn't happen, a follow-up blog post by Menchaca on February 22 made it clear that both the XPS 17 and XPS 15 will indeed offer previously outlined features such as Sandy Bridge Dual Core i3/i5/i7 processors; NVidia Optimus graphics options for the i7 versions; USB 3.0 ports; Skype-certified HD Webcams; a "full Stage experience" on all panels; and the aforementioned high-end audio.

In his post on Tuesday, Menchaca added some new information to the previously intimated facts about XPS. Somewhat vaguely, he mentioned support for "a range of Sandy Bridge or Huron River CPU options: i3/i5/i7. Dual core and Quad core." Huron River, Intel's mobile platform, integrates Sandy Bridge, but the two are not one and the same.

Menchaca also spoke on Tuesday of a new panel on the 17-inch model that "brings 3D capability with a 1920-by-1080 screen." When used with the new optionally available 1920-by-1080 screen and a 3GB NVidia GeForce GT 555, the XPS 17 can deliver "new levels of performance in 2D and especially 3D gaming, and beyond," according to the Dell blogger.

In a statement e-mailed to me soon afterward that same day, a Dell spokesperson dubbed the XPS 17 "the first laptop to integrate 3DTV play software for 3D Blu-ray playback, gaming and photos." The XPS 15 also offers an option for a WLED (1920-by-1080) screen, she said.

Ilustrasi

Just last week, a Dell insider told me that Dell planned to postpone its XPS announcements from February 20 to March 15-or even later-due to "the problems with Intel's chips."

But things can change fast in laptop land. In the announcement released through Menchaca's blog on Tuesday, he also alluded to chipset snares, but he strongly suggested that Dell has found workarounds.

Dell is no stranger to 3D displays thanks to its Alienware division but they also offer their own XPS performance laptops now featuring a 3D display and the new 2nd generation Intel Core processor.
